What are your opinions of self help books and people who read them?

I am always willing to try anything once and this friend recommended a book to me but I always notice that he has a dependency on others many times needing guidance from someone or something else. So do you often think that people who read these books are often helpless or maybe they just want to better themselves?

They can make people feel better or less on their own, but I think they often only help in the short term as it is hard to change how one thinks or acts in the long term after a life of doing things a certain way or thinking a certain way.

I have a friend who reads many Self Help Books and I think to most people they are a comforter to make themselves feel better and they give people hope that they might change or make things better.

I think if a book only explains why you feel the way you do it can help you feel better even if you stay the same because you learn to accept the way you are and understand why you are that way.

Personally I like to try and figure things out for myself.

A Huge Difference From Self-Help Books?

In Man’s Search For Meaning, Viktor Frankl said: "Don’t aim at success—the more you
aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success,
like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue…as the unintended side-
effect of one’s personal dedication to a course greater than oneself."

And in other books, exactly is almost, authors said that we must set some clearly targets and make every effort, do everything until we get it.

So does it mean let life is what it is, don’t try to reach a target or do st. If Success likes, it’ll come to me? Or contrary

Or it just two sides of one thing

The most important question is "How do i do right?" , sit and wait or do everything to reach my target, to get SUCCESS

I MUST get one thing in two years, it seems be the meaning of my life right now, it’s the reason i get up every morning. But Like quote of Viktor Frankl, i’d better don’t aim at it, i’d better give it up? Or like Brian Tracy, Napoleon Hill … Let dream about it, do everything and everything I can till i get it.

It seems so confused, i can make it clearly.

So which is right, which is wrong? And How must I do?

Christian self help book ideas?

I am looking for a christian based Self Help book for a friend who is about to have a nervous breakdown because her partner (with whom she has a kid) is leaving her, her teenage daughter is extreamly rebellious and she has financial problems. She is not a christian, so i dont want to overwelhm her, but she needs serious devine intervention. Any suggestions?

Volunteer for Pa Nepal Which Works for Poor Children in Nepal

PA Nepal is a grass-roots organization with a huge heart, but not a lot of resources or cash flow. They need volunteers who have a common vision and are capable of helping to launch new projects, assist in fundraising, help in administration, accounting and office management as well as volunteers who are good role models who can work with the children to encourage self confidence and self sufficiency. Volunteers can assist by doing following tasks:-

They specifically need volunteers to provide tutoring and assistance with homework and prepare educational activities, programs and field trips for the children to help improve their self confidence and self sufficiency. The director can also use help developing vocational training and programs for women in prison and she may need assistance with prison visits. The staff also require office assistance, accounting help and computer training, as well as help creating presentations, publications and funding proposals. PA Nepal also needs volunteers to just “lend a hand” to help the children get ready for school, assisting with dinner cleanup, teaching the kids proper hygiene, reading them books etc. Pitch in where you see a need!

Volunteers must be of age 18 or above with minimum education of high school.

Volunteers with the following special skills are preferred for the placement:-
