As an ex self harmer i am aware of triggers. I remember hunting down information about s harm/injury online then being accidentally triggered.
How can handle this difficult topic sensitively and avoid triggers while raising awareness of the issues around self harm/injury.
I do not want to trigger people, nor do i want to be insensitive. The aim of the video is to raise awareness and reduce the stigma. I hope in my own little way to help people.
(the video is for you tube)
I am stable enough not to self harm, i haven’t harmed myself for years.
I’m sorry everyone, but from reading your answers i have decided i simply can’t make a video about self harm.
unless you are totally over the feelings that caused you to self harm in the first place then I really do think that this would not be a good idea to do. I do understand you wanting to get it out there and help other to understand etc etc but you must always put your own safety first. make sure that you are really stable enough not be have these things effect you so bad that it triggers you off before you start. Good luck take care

Triggers? They’re using guns now huh? Well I suppose it will get the overall job finished quicker.

You might understand your own triggers but others may have different triggers. You are probably not the best person to do this video without having a professional work with you. So, that would be my suggestion. Get a psychiatrist or psychology professional to help you so that you do no harm or so you don’t incite others to harm themselves. It’s admirable that you want to help people, in your own way, but you must realize that you could actually place yourself into a position of enabler or you could communicate the exact opposite of your true intent. That would spell disaster. I hope you have help from a professional and I hope that maybe you could maybe get a group together that would, with the help of a professional, lead others to get help. Good luck.

I think this is very tricky coz i am a self harmer and when i look up advice and stuff, you can get new ideas of how to harm your self and not get caught. you will just have to make sure you do not glamourise it. When you have made the video let me know, i’d love to watch it, it might help me.

I used to harm myself as well, but I have a huge problem with the idea of triggers and the popular media latching itself to self injury.
Triggers can be anything from talking about details to merely saying the word rape. It can also be something as obvious as showing images of cuts, scars or even the colour red. The problem I have with this idea of triggers is that it takes responsibility away from the person who harms themselves and puts it on the behavior, calling it an addiction or something out of the ‘cutters’ control. Yes, it’s true, some people who harm themselves have impulse control issues, but that is not your responsibility while making a video or putting out info about self-injury. Do what you think is appropriate. If someone is triggered by it, well that’s their problem not yours or your fault. Self injury is no one but the self injurers responsibility.
Second the popular media and self-injury. Raising awareness is a double edged sword when it comes to something like this. On one hand it gives those who need the information, such as people who engage in this behavoir or those who know someone who does and that’s good, but on the other hand it gives ideas. When I was a teenager I hadn’t a clue what self injury was or that anyone would do anything like that, but then I was confronted with a radio show where a woman was talking about how she used to cut herself to cope with depression. I started doing it as a last resort to coping with my problems. Who knows if I hadn’t heard of it, maybe I would have done it anyways or maybe I would have got myself some help instead of continuing to live in shame of both my depression and later my self injury. With that said, I think it’s responsible to avoid talking about tools used and to emphasis the negative effects of self injury as opposed to worrying about triggers.

i think i subject like this will be difficult to produce a video 4. You should look at the kinds of things that used to trigger you of and base the video around that. Also if you are making the video to make people more aware then people that all ready self harm will not need to watch it as they are all ready aware of what self harming is all about. I hope this answer has helped Good luck
